FAQs About the iPhone 5 Repairs

Here are some of the most common questions we get asked around iPhone 5 Repairs - select your issue and see what we can do for you.

My phone isn’t holding its charge - do I need a battery replacement for my iPhone 5?

You might not need a new battery: there are several reasons why your device isn’t holding its charge and it might not be down to an iPhone 5 battery problem at all. Here are a few things to check: shine a light into the charging socket on your phone - if there’s any lint or fluff in there, this could be causing the problem. Use a toothbrush (or something similar that won’t conduct electricity!) to clean the charging port.
Borrow someone else’s charging cable and try this with your iPhone 5 - the issue may be a faulty or broken cable, and not your device at all. If your phone is dead, try undertaking a ‘hard reset’ - to effect this, hold down the power and the home button together for 30 seconds which may reboot the phone and fix the problem.
If none of the above works, it might be that an iPhone 5 battery replacement is required. Get in touch with us at iSmash and we’ll diagnose the problem for you and fix it while you wait.

The sound isn’t working on my iPhone 5...can you help?

Please forgive us for asking but...is the volume turned up? If it is, and there’s still no sound, at least you’ve eliminated one potential issue. All is not lost: we have some tricks to help you break the silence. First, check there is nothing plugged into the headset jack (if you have your earphones in or it is connected via bluetooth to another device, the sound could be being piped elsewhere). Next, check the speaker and dock ports are free of debris - use a toothbrush or something that won’t conduct electricity to get any grime out. If you still have no sound on your iPhone 5, check again that Bluetooth is turned off, restart the device, and check you have the latest version of iOS. Still only hearing the sound of silence? Let iSmash look into it for you and we’ll restore some audio to your life.

My touchscreen has stopped working - do I need an iPhone 5 screen repair?

In order to diagnose this and work out if you need an iPhone screen repair or replacement, we need to understand if the problem is software or hardware related. If it’s software, rejoice: there are some things that you can do. If it’s an intermittently occurring problem that only manifests itself when a certain app is in use, try uninstalling that piece of software. As with many common issues, a hard reset is occasionally a good starting point to clear out the phone and restore it to its former glory. You shouldn’t do this regularly, but it can be a way to fix deep-seated problems. To do a hard reset, hold the power and home buttons together for 30 seconds. If the iPhone 5 screen is still not working, it may be a hardware problem. If you’ve recently dropped your phone, this could be to blame even if there is no visible damage to the phone. A repair to the circuitry behind the screen, or possibly an iPhone 5 replacement screen is necessary - iSmash will be able to help. Contact us to get your device booked in for diagnosis and repair while you wait.

How do you repair a water damaged iPhone 5?

Firstly, if you are not already certain that your iPhone has water damage, you can check by looking at your iPhone's water damage indicator. On the iPhone 5, this is a little white tab located in the SIM card tray slot. If the indicator has turned red your phone likely has a problem. If so, then these are the steps that you need to follow:

- Immediately turn off the phone to stop it from short-circuiting
- Remove your phone case if you have one
- Remove the SIM card tray)
- Wipe down your iPhone with an absorbent cloth
- Wrap a small piece of absorbent cloth around a toothpick or pin, use this to soak up any water from the charging port, headphone jack and sim card tray
- Leave your phone in a dry place, and let it air for as long as possible without turning it on
- Wait for as long as possible. If the phone has any water in it when you turn it back on there's a good chance it will short-circuit, so leave it for at least 48 hours, ideally longer

It is worth noting though that even after taking this action, the iPhone's internal circuitry will still eventually break down, this process just stalls it. Therefore, it is best to bring it into iSmash to have it checked over by one of our repair technicians. An iPhone 5 Liquid Diagnosis costs £20 and takes between 24 and 48 hours.

How do you repair an iPhone 5 camera?

- Reset your iPhone to default settings by going to "Reset All Settings" in the iPhone settings app
